Markarian’s Chain

Markarian’s Chain

Markarian’s Chain is a visually striking arc of galaxies located within the heart of the Virgo Cluster, approximately 50–60 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. The chain forms a gentle curve of bright elliptical and lenticular galaxies stretching across about 1.5 degrees of sky. It was named after Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, who first noted their common motion, suggesting they are physically associated rather than merely aligned by chance. The most prominent members include Messier 84 and Messier 86, which anchor the western portion of the chain.

The Virgo Cluster itself contains more than 1,500 cataloged galaxies and represents the nearest large galaxy cluster to the Local Group. Within Markarian’s Chain, the galaxies are dominated by massive ellipticals and lenticular systems, many of which harbor supermassive black holes and extended halos of hot X-ray–emitting gas. Among the most intriguing pairs is NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, often called “The Eyes.” NGC 4438 shows dramatic tidal distortion, likely the result of a close gravitational encounter that stripped gas and stars from its disk, leaving extended filaments and warped structure.

Unlike compact galaxy groups such as the Leo Triplet, Markarian’s Chain is part of a much larger gravitational ecosystem where interactions, mergers, and high-speed encounters are common. Many of its galaxies show signs of environmental processing — gas stripping, truncated star formation, and morphological transformation driven by the dense cluster environment. For observers and imagers, the Chain offers a remarkable field where dozens of galaxies populate a single frame, serving as a sweeping portrait of large-scale structure and a vivid illustration of how galaxies evolve within the crowded core of a cluster.
